LOCAL COMPANIES NEEDED TO HELP FIGHT CANCER

American Cancer Society Relay For Life Looking for Local Sponsors

April 10, 2009 – The American Cancer Society urges local companies to take up the fight against cancer in their community by becoming sponsors of Relay For Life. Many do not realize that the moment a person is diagnosed with cancer is the moment they also become a survivor. It is critical that companies support their co-workers that are surviving cancer. Cancer touches everyone, and involvement in Relay For Life is a great way to show that a company cares. Sponsorships can be tailored to a company’s ability to give.

This is the 25th year of Relay and the 10th year the event has been held in the Donelson-Hermitage community. The Donelson-Hermitage Relay For Life Celebration will take place on June 5 and 6 from 7p.m. to 7a.m. Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for your American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people will gather at Summit Medical Center and take turns walking laps. The evening will be kicked off with a victory lap to celebrate cancer survivors, followed by the Luminaria Ceremony of Hope.

As the sun sets over campsites and darkness falls, the night is brightened by the glow of illuminated bags called luminaria, each of which has a special meaning. Some celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer and have lived to tell their stories. Many remember the lives of those who have been lost to this disease. All represent someone special who has been profoundly affected by cancer and the family and friends who continue to fight back in their honor. Luminaria bags can be purchased for five dollars at the event or before by visiting the event’s website.

Relay For Life helps a community celebrate the lives of those who have faced cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease.
